Plan for Rev. Hannah’s Parental Leave

Rev. Hannah Capaldi is rapidly approaching the due date of Capaldi baby #1!  With the transition to being a family of three, Rev. Hannah will be on vacation beginning August 2nd and will start twelve weeks of parental leave August 25th. She will return to the congregation just before Thanksgiving. During her leave, Rev. Abbey Tennis will work to support the programs overseen by Rev. Hannah.

What will this look like for the congregation?

It wasn’t that long ago that Rev. Abbey was a solo minister, but as we’ve grown there’s no way one person can cover the work that two ministers do.  Rev. Abbey will maintain her normal duties of worship leader, primary Board contact, and staff supervisor.  Alongside these, she will be in strong contact with the lay leaders of the Caring Ministries, Small Group Ministry, Religious Education, and Membership, all of which usually live with Rev. Hannah.  With the collaboration of staff and lay leadership, we believe this will be a time of minimal disruption to our work of carrying out our mission of awakening love and justice in our lives and the world, and provide an opportunity for increased participation and leadership from you, our members and friends!
What will committees and teams look like?

One place that will see some change is the presence of a minister at evening meetings.  Since Abbey and Hannah often have different meetings during the week, there will be reduced ability for ministerial presence at so many different committees and teams.  Below is what we’ve communicated to leaders about what to expect for Hannah’s leave:

  • Board, Committee on Shared Ministry, Finance Working Group, Worship Associates, Social Justice Groups: Will retain same level of ministerial presence during Hannah’s leave.
  • Caring Team: Will retain half-time presence of minister at weekly meetings, but full time pastoral care responsibilities.
  • Membership, Religious Education, Small Group Ministries: Will have on-going support from Rev. Abbey but not consistent attendance at monthly meetings.
  • Vespers Services: Will be led by Rev. Abbey
  • Facilities & Board Working Groups, e.g. Accessibility Task Force, Friends of 2125: Will have ministerial presence on an as-needed basis
  • Stewardship: Our annual stewardship campaign will take place in the Fall of 2021, rather than the spring, as it did last year. This will help us build on our recent successes and allow the campaign to happen when Abbey can remain the lead ministerial support.

As we navigate our second ministerial parental leave, back-to-back, it is remarkable to observe the strength and grace that this congregation has demonstrated.  We are both very lucky to serve a community that supports its ministers with a fierce commitment to carrying out the mission of the congregation and to living into the values of shared ministry and shared leadership.

In faith and with gratitude,

Rev. Abbey and Rev. Hannah
