In fall 2024, we launched our Building for Tomorrow Capital Campaign, to raise funds for our first building renovation in over 65 years. Our goal is to secure and preserve our building for generations of future use. If you’d like to support this campaign, you can make a pledge and set up a payment online. You can also drop off or mail a check to the church office. We also invite anyone interested, to request a Capital Campaign visit with the form below.
Our plan is to secure and protect our building with a new roof, and energy efficient repairs to windows and masonry. We will upgrade our building’s systems, including electric, plumbing, and lighting, increasing safety. We dream of a Sanctuary that reflects the congregation we are today, perhaps with a mural that speaks to our social justice history and diverse theology. We plan to install air conditioning, supplementary heating, and cut-outs in our pews to create dignified seating for those using mobility devices.
A major goal of this renovation is to improve accessibility. We will configure our first floor for two accessible bathrooms, flexible seating in our Chapel, acoustic improvements in the Parish Rooom, and make our courtyard a flexible and accessible outdoor space. We will build an elevator down to our Griffin Hall basement, nearly doubling our accessible square footage and install new private all gender bathrooms.
Our building is a space shared by tens of thousands of community members each year: our congregants, preschool teachers and families, our rental community, and concert and event attendees. It holds an important piece of Philadelphia history. Every effort we make to expand the accessibility, safety, and functionality of our building touches all through walk through our doors. We want to welcome people here for years to come.

Capital Campaign Updates:
New Roof, Same Open Hearts
September 21, 2025
The wait for a new roof on our historic sanctuary is nearly over. Over the summer, the newly formed Capital Projects Group recommended Kurtz Construction Company from Wyndmoor as the contractor to install new Asphalt Carriage House Style Shingles. The board approved the recommendations, kicking off the first phase of our $4 million Building for Tomorrow Capital Campaign. Our building will be wrapped in scaffolding for several months starting in October, while our shingles are all replaced. We expect full access to the building–including for both daycares–to continue.
We are a year into our three-year Capital Campaign. We’re excited to share that we’ve raised $1.72 million in total so far! Our congregation has generously pledged $1.12 million. We’ve received another $350k in grants and Friends of 2125 Chestnut St. have raised $250k. Thank you to our donors who have made this roof repair possible! We are on our way to preserving our building for generations to come.
How can you be involved? If you have not yet made a Capital Campaign pledge, request a visit or go straight to the online form to make a pledge. If you have a pledge, we encourage you to make those payments so we can minimize the amount we need to borrow temporarily. We invite everyone to visit the Capital Campaign page on our website where we will start posting regular updates and photographs.
